Millfields 1 – 2 Billinge U13’s
Having not played for a number of weeks as a result of the poor weather it was a pleasant surprise to be met with glorious sunshine.
Playing with the sun in their eyes for the first half the defence responded magnificently to the typical early onslaught from Millfields.
With growing confidence we began to move the ball out of defence quite confidently and numerous raids were made down both flanks with both Matthew and Jerome attacking the Millfields fullbacks.
Mid way through the first half came the first clear chance and a through ball from Millfields escaped our defence, however Adam was quickly off his line and realising he was just out side of the penalty area and without a second thought bravely headed the ball clear.
This seemed to inspire the boys and shortly after following a raid down the left Mike calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper from a tight angle to put us 1 up.
With only minutes remaining until half time and for the first time the defence momentarily fell asleep and after failing to clear the ball Millfields equalised with a fine shot from the edge of the box which gave Adam in goal no chance.
HT 1 -1
The second half continued in the same vein as the first with both sides pressing for the all important second goal, however both defences remained resolute and a draw looked the most likely result.
Myles had other ideas and following another excellent corner kick from the left which Millfields partially cleared the loose ball was knocked back in to penalty box with Myles first to react heading to ball past the keeper to put Billinge 2 – 1 up.
With Millfields pressing for the equaliser all the boys from front to back defended magnificently to keep the home team at bay, with Tom H in the centre of defence outstanding.
The sound of the referees whistle came as a welcome relief as we came away with our first ever victory against a fine Millfields team who again contributed to another enjoyable game of junior football
